Have you got a beautiful yard but find it difficult to protect your plants and flower beds against weeds, or worry about how to prevent the frost from destroying your mortar over winter? Well with the right type of landscape fabric your problems may soon be over.

Here are some of the common problems that can be prevented by using landscape fabrics:

Weeds

There is an effective solution that you can use to control of weeds in an environmentally way. Plantex is a non-chemical weed barrier that allows your soil and plants to breathe, whilst at the same time eliminating the issue of weeds from spurting up from the ground below. It also enables the necessary amount of air, water and nutrients to pass through to the roots and can be applied on to any surface where weeds pose a threat including paths, patios and block paving.

TDP50 is another landscape fabric that has proven to be successful in combating weeds. It can be used on borders, underneath decking and on gravel paths and patios; however it is not suitable for use under turf.

Excessive Root Growth

Most paved areas, asphalted surfaces and gardens are threatened by the overgrowth of plant and tree roots. DuPont Root Barrier is an innovative fabric which can be used to remove the problem of invasive growth as well as protect against damage to buildings and other related utility channels.

DuPont can also be used in parks and gardens and is a very useful tool for landscapers as it will offer protection to roots against pollutants and acids in the soil. Its results are long lasting and require little maintenance.

Absorbent Mineral Surfaces

ProCover is a water-based, non chemical cleaner that can be used to protect all types of absorbent mineral surfaces from block paved driveways to indoor natural stone tiles and outdoor patios. This product comes with the added benefit of providing protection against oil and fat based pollution such as petrol and diesel.

There are a number of ways to use landscape fabrics in your garden as it is easily one of the main requirements of any landscaping project, big or small. They can be used to contain the problem of weeds spurting up from between your gravel, mulch or paving.

One of the most unique things about them is that whilst they are strong enough to keep the weeds back, they still allow your soil to breathe and for water to seep through. They can also help offer your garden protection against damage caused by root growth, which is a common threat to lawns and paved areas such as driveways and patios.

Other types of fabrics can be found in the form of non-chemical cleaners which can help reduce the need to constantly clean your stoned surfaces with water. They do this by offering an environmentally friendly way to keeping your patios and paving waterproofed, and can even be used inside your home if you have stone floors.

Some of the other general uses for landscaping fabrics are to create weed barriers for your vegetable patch as well as to offer further protection to your plant beds. Good quality landscape fabric should be durable, air and water permeable, as well as have the ability to withstand any potential foot traffic.

The type of fabric you use will depend on the type of project you plan to use it for. Some of the different types that can be used include Plantex and TDP50 landscape fabric, Root Barrier for protection against root damage and ProCover for an effective mineral surface cleaning and protection solution.

Finally, once your garden is fully protected against the harmful effects of roots and weeds, you can begin to decorate it and add any required finishing touches. Recycled plastic products are an ideal choice as not only do they look fantastic, but are long lasting and durable too. The range of recycled products includes garden furniture, decking and fencing and more.

There are many benefits to using recycled plastic products. For one, recycled plastic lasts up to five times longer than wood and therefore costs less to look after. Plastic is also easy to clean, it’s extremely durable against natures elements and does not rust.

The other advantages of using recycled plastic products include the face that they do not need to be painted or varnished and best of all, they are 100% recyclable. In fact, by opting for plastic products you will help protect the environment because for every tonne, used 1.66 tonnes of CO2 is saved.

Flooding and drainage are now major environmental issues. Surface water run-off was one of the main causes of the flooding disasters of 2007, with drainage systems and subsequently rivers unale to cope with such signicant
amounts of water.

In England, as of the 1st October 2008, planning permission is now required to
install any new impermeable paving in from front gardens exceeding 5m2.

Therefore, drainage for driveways needs to be Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems compliant in order to avoid requiring planning permission and this was one of the challenges of this project.

To enhance the visual appeal of the landscaped areas within his property and
comply with the new regulation, Mr Turner decided to install a new porous gravel driveway, erect a wall along a boundary and return the existing shared access driveway back to being a soft landscaped area. Another challenge was the slope from the road down to the house and the need to retain the gravel to prevent it migrating down the slope.

After extensive research into various solutions, Mr Turner decided to choose TDP PorousPave, Porous Pavement by TDP Limited, being highly cost effective and very easy to install.

Upon successful completion of the instalation, Mr Turner commented ‘I would not hesitate to use PorousPave again and would recommend it as the best proous surfacing solution for any similar project.’

Darwin Forest Country Park, winner of Hoseasons Best Lodge Park in Britain 2009, provides high quality self-catering holiday accommodation in the Derbyshire Peak District.

As the name suggests, the country park is set within beautiful mature woodland with a comprehensive range of superb facilities including ‘Evolution’ health spa and the recentrly constructed ‘Little Monkeys’ childrens indoor adventure centre.

Ongoing development of the park necessitated the provision of 2,000m2 of additional car parking to a design that was in keeping with the natural setting of the park.

The design and build developers, Pinelog Limited, chose to install Porous Pavement, TDP PorousPave, infilled with locally sourced gravel.

Porous Pavement Installed in Darwin Forest Country Park

In keeping with their environmental ethos. Pinelog’s architech, Roger Langham, incorporated a sustainable drainage solution following discussions with the Environment Agency who imposed a limited discharge consent on any new development at the site.

Percolation tests confirmed that infiltration was possible and TDP PorousPave from TDP Limited was chosen as the most appropiate surfacing solution in terms of performance, aesthetics and cost.

Being delighted with the end result, Hugh Grayson, Chairman of Pinelog is keen to use the system on future leisure projects across the UK.

A 17 year old company, so just coming of age, we are one of the leading suppliers of fibre technology products in the UK.

So what is fibre technology? well you could say we grew out of the industrial revolution. Over 200 years ago spinning fabric like cotton became big business with the first factories, social housing and unions. Nowadays all sorts of materials are spun for thousands of end uses. From the same old cotton to Kevlar and carbon fibre all are spun in high tech environments. Clothing, construction, automotive including formula one to the military all utilise some form of high tech fibre.

At TDP we distribute a range of products that includes DuPont Plantex weed control to breathable roof membranes to fibre additives for concrete and plastering to prevent cracking. We moved to our current premises in Wirksworth, Derbyshire in 1999 and operate with 10 employees. With converting facilities for rolled fabrics we add value to the supply chain. Some of our products are our own invention and some we distribute throughout the UK for major worldwide manufactures.
